Motion Blur of People Walking in the City

Leadership with Dr. Dan: Culture Matters

What is culture? It’s simply the way a group of people think, talk, act and do things. And whether we know it or not, everything we do as leaders (even unintentionally) is shaping culture. Here are four thoughts and questions on the cultures we are creating as leaders . . . I hope they challenge you as you ponder them this week.

Culture is shaped by 4 things in an organization:

  • The action and behaviors of leaders: What message do yours send?
  • What leaders pay attention to: Where is your focus?
  • What gets rewarded and what gets punished? What do you value – intentionally and unintentionally?
  • The allocation and attention of resources – How are you providing for others’ success?
